Run, Lizzie. Run.

I can still hear my mom’s words of encouragement echo in my head when I think back to my first marathon. She cheered me on at not just one, but five spots along those 26 miles — her bright smile pushing me onward to the finish line.

My name is Liz Dunning, vice president of Development at Brady, and I’m writing to you, John, to share my story. This week marked seven years since the jury reached a verdict in my mom's murder case, nearly 12 years after she was shot and killed opening her front door in Virginia.

Five years ago, I decided I wanted to do something to commemorate my mom — something that would take grit and sacrifice. And, as if the stars aligned, I found a marathon to run on her birthday. I would run 26 miles to celebrate the 26 years of life my mom and I shared together. I ran for my mom — for all the memories we shared and all the ones stolen by gun violence. I ran for the grandsons she never had a chance to meet. And I ran for the safer country that we all deserve to live in. We raised almost $30,000 for Brady that day to honor her.

It wouldn’t be until many years later, and after my mom’s killer was finally convicted, that I found the strength to dedicate my career and life to preventing more tragedy with Brady. It’s still not easy. But I know we are getting closer to a real solution to this violent epidemic. In the last few months alone, Brady helped get the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act over the finish line, we passed more than 30 gun safety laws in states across the nation, and our legal team filed three landmark cases against the multi-billion dollar gun industry.

We’re making real, lasting progress, John. But as you know, there’s always more work to be done to end this epidemic — and that’s why I’m reaching out today. These sensible and effective policies are part of Oregon's Ballot Measure 114 [[link removed]] , which would adopt some of the strongest gun violence prevention regulations in the country. Johns Hopkins researchers have found that laws similar to Measure 114 are associated with a substantial reduction in gun deaths.

Polls show that the majority of Oregon voters are in favor of Measure 114, so we just need to ensure they get to the polls!
