After packing the House (of Representatives), H.R. 8 -- the Bipartisan Background Checks Act -- passed! This was the first gun violence bill to pass through the House in a generation.
Over 300 young people from around the country came together for #OurPower -- our first-ever summit to train student organizers with the tools and skills they need to take on the NRA and fight for gun safety laws.
We rolled out our Peace Plan -- a bold, comprehensive layout for the policies and steps a future president should take to end the gun violence epidemic.
In collaboration with Giffords, we brought nine of the leading Democratic presidential candidates together in one of the first presidential forums on gun violence and talked to them about policy and violence prevention.
Our student lobbyists took to the Hill and social media through the #WeNeedToKnow campaign with Brady to advocate for more funding for gun violence research. And, just a few weeks ago, Congress reached a deal to allocate $25 MILLION towards that research.
So, yeah, I would say between all of this, dozens of legislative victories at the state level, PLUS all the NRA fails, it was a pretty good year. All of it was thanks to the support of activists, families, educators, and young people from around the country -- like you!
But we’re not done yet. Despite all our hard work, not enough change has happened. 2019 was the deadliest year for mass killings dating back to the 1970s -- most of it was mass shootings. And everyday gun violence has kept with the same record highs we’ve been seeing.
Political corruption and inaction are still delaying bills. Every historic gun violence prevention bill that has passed the House has stalled in the Senate without even being given a vote. So much more could be done if we had elected officials who listened to the people instead of Wayne LaPierre and his NRA money.
That’s why, in 2020, we’re committed to registering as many young people to vote as possible AND turning them out to vote. When #GenerationLockdown votes, we vote for gun safety candidates, just like we did in historic numbers in 2018. We Vote For Our Lives.
Thanks for being a part of this journey -- together, we’ve changed the political climate around gun reform, and only together can we make real change possible. It’s been almost two years since we said #NeverAgain, but we’re not shutting up anytime soon.
We’re fighting for peace and justice. We’re taking on the NRA. And with your help, we’re going to win.
In solidarity,
March For Our Lives
