But let us take a minute to brag on the woman running against him, because she’s more than just “the person running against Matt Gaetz.”

Rebekah grew up the second of four children to teenage parents in rural, south Mississippi. She earned a full scholarship to Syracuse University, where she graduated cum laude even after having her son midway through college ([link removed]) . Rebekah then went on to earn her Master of Science degree from LSU in climate science, then moved to Florida in 2016 to begin her doctoral studies.

Along the way, she was elected thrice to the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications student representative committee, was appointed by the Dean of her college at LSU to the Presidential Transition Advisory Committee (one of only two graduate students at the university appointed), and won some of the highest honors in her field.

Rebekah Jones is a published, award-winning, and internationally celebrated scientist whose research focuses on reconstructing historical hurricanes over the last 18,000 years. You can read her very long scientific and professional credentials in the resume below.

Rebekah committed her education and career to studying climate change and its impacts on extreme weather after experiencing the destructive force of hurricanes first-hand in 2005 with Hurricane Katrina. Rebekah worked in public service as a scientist, researcher and disaster response manager for more than a decade before setting her sights on Congress.
