Politics can be complicated, but there’s one maxim that is simple and easy to follow: don’t lie.

Children are taught that lying is wrong from a young age. If you lie to your employer, or to the government, for example, there are serious consequences—you can be fired, or worse, if you are caught lying.

Politicians think they can lie to the media and to voters only because they believe they can get away with it. And when they are called out, it is easy to muddy the waters and try to complicate the context surrounding the lie. This is exactly what Ann Wagner does, and what she did when KSDK fact-checked her after I said she voted against our right to access birth control:

This kind of equivocation from someone entrusted to represent us in Congress is unacceptable. Rep. Wagner should at least have the integrity and the courage to stand by her votes, and her beliefs. But we have come to expect the opposite from her year after year.

The truth is, Ann simply does not think Americans have a right to contraception and other forms of birth control. She does not believe that women should be in charge of their own reproductive healthcare decisions, and that the government should be involved in our most intimate and private choices, such as when and how to start a family.

This is the decision set before the voters—reelect a person who lies with a straight face about something as basic as whether we have a right to access birth control; or vote for someone who is clear and upfront about their views, who shows up in every community, and listens and works for them.

The choice between myself and Ann Wagner is crystal clear. Now, we need to keep working to make sure we reach as many voters as we can with this message before Election Day.
