As someone raised by migrant farm workers, I was up against all odds to become a United States Congressman.

My family lived in a small trailer in rural California. My brother and I and shared a bed that in the daytime converted into a kitchen table.

But with the help of my family and my community I went to UCLA and eventually to Harvard Medical school.

I never would have succeeded without my community behind me and that is the reason I have dedicated my life to service. First as a doctor and now as a Congressman.
