SUBJECT: Recent case updates

The Center for Reproductive Rights is litigating dozens of cases around the world to challenge restrictions on access to abortion and other reproductive health care and to expand reproductive rights. Your support makes our critical work possible. Below are some highlights of the Center’s current and recent cases.




A Victory for Girls in Tanzania and Beyond
On September 15, the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child ruled that the practice of expelling pregnant girls from school violated adolescent girls’ human rights and recommended that Tanzania reform its education policies. The case, brought by the Center and the Legal and Human Rights Centre of Tanzania, was filed on behalf of six adolescent girls who were expelled from school for being pregnant, as well as all girls in Tanzania who are forced to undergo mandatory pregnancy testing and expelled permanently if pregnant. Litigation Filed to Decriminalize Abortion in Nepal
The Center continues to provide technical support on a case filed by the Forum for Women Law and Development demanding that the government of Nepal fully decriminalize abortion in accordance with constitutional guarantees and United Nations recommendations. Despite making several commitments to abortion rights and access, Nepal still categorizes abortion as a crime in its penal code. Read more [[link removed]] .

Center Argues to Protect Abortion Rights in the U.S. Under State Constitutions
Last month, the Center and partners argued in South Carolina and Georgia against state laws banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy—and for the protection of abortion rights under each state’s constitution. For decades, the Center has brought cases in state courts to build protections for reproductive rights at the state level, independent of federal law. Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has taken away the constitutional right to abortion, state constitutions matter more than ever. Read more [[link removed]] .
