Expansion of border policy blocks Venezuelans from asylum process

NIJC condemns the plan to expand the Title 42 expulsion policy to include Venezuelans, except for those who meet certain requirements that a privileged few do under a new U.S. program. Read the FAQ about the Venezuela parole program and Title 42 expansion. Like all migrants arriving at the border, Venezuelans are lawfully entitled to seek asylum protections. Their ability to access the U.S. asylum system should not be contingent on their financial means or connections in the United States. Read our statement.

IN THE NEWS: NIJC Executive Director Mary Meg McCarthy spoke to CQ Roll Call about the inadequacies of the program.

DACA remains in danger

On October 14, 2022, Texas-based U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen issued an order that blocked the Biden administration's new rule on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) from going into effect. First-time applicants are still blocked from receiving DACA, while current DACA recipients are still protected and can continue to renew for now. However, we don't know when that window will close and NIJC encourages people to renew DACA as soon as possible if they are eligible. NIJC will continue our free DACA renewal legal clinics. Read NIJC's DACA update and FAQs.

Civil and immigrant rights leaders denounce racially motivated Texas shooting

NIJC joined 75 organizations in a letter to the Biden administration calling attention to the tragic, hate-based shooting of a group of migrants in Texas and how U.S. policies that dehumanize immigrants give way to white supremacist violence. Read the letter.

Media calls attention to report on protecting immigrant children in government custody

NIJC's report with The Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights exposes how the federal government's "incident reporting" system harms unaccompanied and separated children and prolongs their time in federal custody. See ProPublica's interview with NIJC's Azadeh Erfani who co-authored the report.
