Last month, just after the Delaware primary, Republicans in our state seized an opportunity to challenge the system and gain a few cheap political points. Led partly by their nominee for Attorney General, they convinced the Delaware Supreme Court to do away with no-excuse absentee ballots and same-day voter registration, closing a critical avenue to accessible voting and confusing voters just weeks before the general election.

We still haven’t forgotten the representatives in our state’s General Assembly that entertained baseless voter fraud notions, fanning the flames for Donald Trump to boost their profiles and sow distrust and unnecessary chaos in our electoral process.

Stopping our support at Lisa leaves thousands of Delaware families vulnerable to Republicans’ attacks. With key decisions on the table, no candidate willing to undermine the will of voters or their access to the ballot deserves to serve the people of this state. But new data from NPR shows Republican enthusiasm is growing across the country, threatening to push fringe politics into the mainstream and make voter disenfranchisement, abortion bans, and election denial our dangerous new norm, even in solid blue states like Delaware.

We must give our local races as much attention as our national races or risk a shift toward unchecked extremism. Winning this race means we need Democrats from every corner of our state fired up and ready to turn out. Now is our time to step in and educate voters about what lies ahead and make sure these attacks by radical Republicans never see the light of day.
