As the first openly gay person and first LGBTQ+ Black person elected to the Florida Legislature, I’ve had a front-row seat to the damage caused by Ron DeSantis’ cruel “Don’t Say Gay” law. [[link removed]]
Since its passage in March 2022, Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law has enabled attacks on LGBTQ+ students and teachers. In school districts across the state, books are being banned, teachers are forbidden from mentioning LGBTQ+ issues, and LGBTQ+ kids are being outed to their families.
These shameful attacks are having a significant impact on LGBTQ+ students' mental health. LGBTQ+ Floridians are more than twice as likely to experience depression or anxiety compared to non-LGBTQ+ Floridians — and laws like this are making it worse.
Despite evidence that the Florida law is hurting kids, Republicans are trying to bring “Don’t Say Gay” to D.C. [[link removed]] The House GOP just introduced an anti-LGBTQ+ bill that’s even more extreme than Florida’s. If Democrats lose the US House, the GOP is sure to enact this malicious legislation.
