RE: One Week Out, Wiley Nickel Has Path to Victory in NC-13
With just a week until election day, Wiley Nickel’s campaign in North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District has built a robust, people-powered coalition of support and is in a strong position to flip the highly competitive, newly created seat.
Wiley has the right profile to win in this tossup district. As a two-term State Senator, Wiley Nickel has a proven track record of working across the aisle to get things done. In the state Senate, Wiley Nickel has fought to expand rural broadband, enact Medicaid expansion, and reduce the tax burden on middle class families. In Congress, Wiley Nickel will work with anyone - Republicans, Democrats, Independents - to deliver results for the 13th Congressional District.
THE DISTRICT
North Carolina’s 13th congressional district became competitive after 2020 redistricting gave the state a 14th House seat. It covers one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the country, and is rapidly trending blue. Voters in the 13th district elected Donald Trump in 2016 but flipped for Joe Biden in 2020. It’s a district that Roy Cooper carried by 8 points in 2020.
So far, 2022 early turnout is exceeding 2018 turnout at this point in the cycle, making NC-13 a top pickup opportunity for Democrats.
The race for the 13th Congressional District remains the most competitive in the state and is garnering national attention as one of the 10 Districts Most Likely To Decide Control Of The House.
REACHING NORTH CAROLINA VOTERS
Wiley Nickel’s people-powered, grassroots field program is powered by 20 organizers, fellows, and interns.
Nickel’s field team’s organizing efforts have yielded more than 30,976 phone calls to voters and 26,576 doors knocked in the 13th District since the primary.
Nickel hasn’t shied away from tough conversations with voters across party lines. He’s attended public forums, done dozens of interviews with local press, and hosted roundtable discussions on the issues with Republican, Independent, and Democratic voters. The Nickel campaign’s organizing program could be the winning margin in this race.
BUILDING ROBUST COALITIONS OF SUPPORT:
Nickel continues to build strength and momentum, earning support from North Carolina leaders and organizations from across the district and across the aisle.
Nickel’s endorsers include the North Carolina Police Benevolent Association, Governor Roy Cooper, former Republican Judge Bob Orr, and over 200 National Security leaders across party lines. Nickel is also endorsed by the Congressional Black Caucus, the pro-business New Democrat Coalition, the fiscally responsible Blue Dog Caucus, and many more.
WHAT THE NUMBERS TELL US
While polls have consistently shown a pure toss-up race, most recent public polling conducted by the John Locke Foundation of 750 adults conducted from 10/21/2022 to 10/24/2022 showed Senator Wiley Nickel with a 44-43 lead over Bo Hines. According to the John Locke poll, voters overwhelmingly find Hines more unfavorable than favorable. Other publicly released polls have consistently shown the race in a dead heat, including late October polling from HMP, and a September poll from the Nickel campaign.
THE CONTRAST BETWEEN THE CANDIDATES
Wiley Nickel is running a people-powered, solutions oriented campaign focused on addressing the most pressing kitchen tables issues voters are facing. He’s hosted roundtable discussions with Republican farmers, affordable housing advocates, small business owners, and veterans from the district. With inflation a top of mind issue for NC13 voters, Nickel released an inflation action plan that includes federal policies to lower costs for working families.
By contrast, Bo Hines has shown little interest in engaging with voters, organizations, or local media outlets. Further, the 27-year-old trust fund kid has proposed an immigration moratorium that would tank our state’s economy, an abortion ban that would cost women their lives, and has no plan to improve the lives of American families, saying he’d be “the biggest no-vote in Congress. I refuse to compromise.”
The News & Observer Editorial Board summed it up best when they “strongly endorsed” Wiley Nickel, saying “Democratic state Sen. Wiley Nickel is way ahead of Republican Bo Hines in qualifications and competence.”
