** Exploitation trumps conservation in China ([link removed])

The Chinese Government has finally released a second revision of its draft Wildlife Protection Law for consultation. Sadly, it confirmed our fears that the voices promoting the farming and use of wild animals have again won the upper hand. When the first revision draft of the Law was released in October 2020, EIA had concerns but saw some positive changes. However, the new revision retracts punishment of the managers of illegal operations and continues to endorse the commercial use of wild animals.

** Myanmar blacklisted by financial watchdog ([link removed])

Since the 2021 military coup in Myanmar, our Forests team has exposed the military junta’s illicit timber trade to international markets and was encouraged to see the Financial Action Task Force blacklist the country for failing to tackle money laundering.
