Hi,
All year, Republicans have gotten bolder, clearer, and more united about
their plans to slash Social Security and Medicare.^1
Now, they’re threatening to force the U.S. government to default on the
federal debt, likely triggering a global financial crisis … unless
Democrats agree to cutting these vital programs.^2
Demand Progress Action has been sounding the alarm over Republican plans
to attack Social Security and Medicare for months. Now, with Republicans
getting ready to hold the global economy hostage, it’s time to turn up the
heat on Congress to save Social Security and eliminate the debt ceiling
once and for all.

First, Senator Rick Scott — the head of the National Republican Senatorial
Committee — said he wanted Social Security to sunset after five years. In
August, Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson said funding the program should be
"discretionary."^3
Now, key Republican leaders, including Congressman Kevin McCarthy, are
threatening to vote against raising the debt ceiling next year, forcing
the U.S. government into default, unless Congress makes cuts to Medicare
and Social Security.
Millions of Americans depend on these programs to survive. Any cuts to
them would be not just unacceptable, but wildly unpopular. That’s why
Republicans want to use a must-pass bill like raising the debt ceiling to
enact their cruel agenda.
There’s a simple solution: Democrats must use their power to eliminate the
debt ceiling entirely. It serves no real function, and it gives
Republicans leverage to force draconian spending cuts.
But President Biden — amazingly — appears hesitant to get rid of the debt
limit.^4 That’s why Demand Progress Action is turning up the heat on Biden
and all congressional Democrats to act now to save Social Security and
eliminate the debt ceiling.
