Hi there,

It feels like an understatement to say that 2022 has been a challenging
year for millions of people around the world. War in Ukraine, drought in
the Horn of Africa, flash flooding in Pakistan, hurricane destruction in
Florida and Puerto Rico, and so many other crises continue to devastate so
many people in so many places.

But there’s hope to be found in the growing resilience of communities, the
resolve of our humanitarian teams on the ground, and the generosity of
people like you.

Mercy Corps teams
mobilized throughout the year to help people cope, adapt, and thrive.

Ten months of responding to the war in Ukraine

Mercy Corps team members were on the ground within days of the
outbreak of violence in Ukraine in February. As millions streamed
across the border, our team members were there to help get them the
essentials — food, water, and shelter — plus reliable information to
help navigate to safety.

Since then, we’ve continued to scale up our operations in Ukraine and
at the borders to help people like Valeria (right). Her daughter
finally slept soundly in a Mercy Corps-supported shelter after they
were forced to flee their home.

Catastrophic drought in the Horn of Africa

From Kenya to Somalia to Ethiopia, more than 36 million people in the
region face severe food shortages and require urgent humanitarian aid.
Mercy Corps is addressing people’s basic needs such as water, food,
  shelter, medicine, and clothing.

We are also looking ahead by helping farmers, pastoralists, and
mothers like Munina (right) in Kenya. She is part of a female farmers
group who have received training and cash assistance through Mercy
Corps’ livestock markets program, investing in their future
livelihoods.

Hurricane Fiona hits Puerto Rico

In September, Hurricane Fiona deluged Puerto Rico with upwards of 30
inches of rain within 24 hours causing extensive flooding and power
outages.

Mercy Corps has been working in Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria in
2017 and has helped transform local community centers into "Resilience
Hubs," supplied with solar energy, potable water, and emergency kits.

In the wake of Hurricane Fiona, 17 hubs have been activated to
distribute critically needed supplies, with our partner organizations
helping prepare and deliver food for families.

Our global humanitarian response has
helped families in Ukraine, Horn of Africa, Puerto Rico, and 40+ countries
where we work. You can see more in this year’s Mercy Corps calendar which
features stories of our participants from around the world.
