John, Real Justice backed District Attorney George Gascón is showing exactly what is possible if we elect more progressive DAs in just 5 days.
Just last week, George freed Maurice Hastings.
Maurice was convicted of murder in 1988 and sentenced to life in prison without parole — but ever since his arrest, he continued to maintain his innocence.
And just last month, crime scene DNA was matched to a person who was not Maurice. He was and IS innocent. George immediately vacated his conviction and released Maurice from prison.
Maurice is now free thanks to the Los Angeles DA office’s Conviction Integrity Unit — one of George’s top priorities since we helped elect him in 2020.
Maurice is only one of the TENS OF THOUSANDS of people who have been locked in jail for decades for crimes they didn’t commit. This is why we do this work. We need more DAs like George who understand the justice system is far from perfect and fund Conviction Integrity Units to free wrongfully convicted people like Maurice.
Freeing wrongfully convicted people is on the ballot this year — and in 5 days we have the opportunity to elect 9 more prosecutors ready to join George and our two-dozen other elected prosecutors in this important fight.
Maurice’s case is far from unique. And in other cities where we have elected pro-civil rights DA’s, we are seeing the same kinds of results — freeing folks who were trapped in prison for wrongful convictions.
Kim Foxx, a Real Justice DA In Cook County, which includes Chicago, announced that her office exonerated 8 people from murder convictions this year.
All of these cases were connected to a corrupt and disgraced Chicago Police Detective, Reynaldo Guevara. In fact, DOZENS of his cases have been thrown out.
1 of those 30 cases put an innocent man in prison for 30 YEARS.
Guevara had been accused of manipulating investigations and framing victims — ruining lives — but these wrongfully convicted people finally went free because we helped elect and re-elect Kim Foxx and she is doing the work to right his wrongs.
Kim has also thrown out over 100 convictions connected to another former police Sergeant — Ronald Watts — who also planted evidence and fabricated charges.
THESE are the kinds of DAs we need in every single city and town across the country, restoring justice and not allowing the system to keep innocent men and women locked away.
In solidarity,
Real Justice
