Today marks the end of a decade that saw momentous changes for the Amazon and indigenous rights. And while it's true that in 2019 the Amazon suffered one of the worst crises in history, it is also important to remember the significant progress we have achieved this past decade.
We have been holding back industrial development and resource extraction in the Amazon all decade: from stopping the Tapajos mega-dam on the last free-flowing Amazon River tributary in Brazil, to backing Sarayaku's precedent-setting legal victory when the Inter-American Court ruled that Ecuador had violated their rights by allowing oil drilling on their land, to winning the historic $9.5 billion judgement against Chevron for deliberately polluting the Ecuadorian Amazon, to standing with the U’wa people of Colombia who successfully dismantled the Magallanes gas project on their sacred lands.
Amazon Watch will continue to build upon these victories at this critical moment for the Amazon.
If you have already contributed, thank you! If not, today is your last chance of the year. Please demonstrate your support by making a gift before midnight. All donations will be DOUBLED up to $60,000 and EVERY DOLLAR GOES TO OUR PROGRAM WORK. We are 90% of the way to our goal!
The next decade will ultimately decide the fate of the Amazon and our climate. Will you join me and commit to a new decade of victories by supporting Amazon Watch right now? With your support, we can do even more to permanently protect the Amazon and stand with indigenous forest guardians.
For the Amazon and our collective future,
