Dear Friend,
This week, I wanted to take a moment to remind all New Mexicans, and especially all Medicare recipients, to take advantage of this year’s health care Open Enrollment Period. Open Enrollment lasts from October 15th through December 7th. This is the time when you can evaluate if your current health plan is meeting your needs and if there are better options available since Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act that are more cost-effective. If you are happy with your current health plan, then you do not need to take further action – your current plan will renew automatically! However, if you would like to adjust your current coverage, now is the time.
As your Representative in Congress, one of my priorities is ensuring that every New Mexican has access to high quality and affordable healthcare. Over 20% of New Mexicans are enrolled in Medicare, which is why I am proud that Medicare beneficiaries will benefit from price caps on their prescription drugs and lower premiums through the implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act. In addition, the Inflation Reduction Act caps the price of insulin for Medicare Part D recipients at $35 per month. These steps are crucial to ensuring that everyone is able to get the health care they need – without financial hardship.
The Inflation Reduction Act also helps to keep drug manufacturers in check. Starting in 2023, if a prescription drug company’s prices are increasing faster than the rate of inflation, drug manufacturers will be required to pay rebates to Medicare. This provides one of the most effective checks on Big Pharma’s unfair price hikes in decades. I will continue working hard in Congress for a future where every New Mexican can afford their medications.
A Few November Reminders:
Voting is the best way to support the foundations of our democracy and ensure your voice is heard. Whether in person or by mail, I encourage you to get out and vote today!
- November 5th, is the last day of early in-person voting. In addition, if you haven’t had a chance to mail your absentee ballot yet, the Secretary of State’s office recommends that you turn your ballot in at your nearest early vote location to avoid any mail delays.
- Election Day is next week, November 8th. You can find your nearest polling place by visiting nmvote.org/ to make your plan to vote on Election Day. The polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and you can still vote as long as you are in line before 7:00 p.m.
