John,
Social media was once a promising idea to build a more interconnected world. But it hasn’t quite played out that way. It has turbo-charged political polarization, the spread of conspiracy theories, the deterioration of kids' mental health, and much more.
We’ve had enough. Issue One unites Democrats, Republicans, and independents around reforms that build a democracy that works for everyone, and reforming social media is essential for a more democratic digital future. That’s why we launched the Council for Responsible Social Media.
The council’s launch was covered in the Washington Post. Check it out!
The council has a big mission to hold social media platforms to higher standards and advocate for fundamental changes to these platforms — and we are building the team to do it.
Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen who courageously revealed the dangers of the platform’s algorithms and how they have put profit over people is a council member. So is the Center for Humane Technology Co-founder Tristan Harris who was featured in the Netflix documentary “The Social Dilemma” where he shed light on how social media hooks its users in and how these companies profit from peoples’ addiction. Other members include former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Maria Ressa. And that’s not all — check out who else is on the council.
Learn more about the council.
Big Tech companies are operating with virtually no accountability or oversight. They put profits above the societal harms to our kids, our communities, and U.S. national security. They’re further dividing our country, monetizing outrage politics, and undermining our democracy. That’s why Issue One is expanding our work to this issue where our bipartisan voice and focus on solutions is so needed.
Reforming social media is essential for the health of our democracy, and we’ve got the people and the energy to make real change happen. And that includes you. We’ll be in touch with important opportunities for you to join us in the fight to demand better from social media platforms.
Onward,
Alix Fraser Council for Responsible Social Media Director, Issue One
