Dear Ward 8 Residents,

On October 24, I introduced a bill with the support of nine of my council colleagues to rename Good Hope Road after our Mayor for Life, the late, Marion Barry.

Residents have advocated for the last three years on the renaming of Good Hope Road to honor Marion Barry's impact in Ward 8 and across this city.

Chairman Mendelson blocked the bill from appearing on Tuesday's council meeting agenda, instead moving it to December 13 for a public hearing. While I welcome the scheduled hearing in December, I am concerned the bill will lose momentum because the timing coincides with the end of the council period.

Thousands of petitions were signed by DC residents in favor of the name change. We do not need anyone to decide what we want for our community.

Those who wish to advocate on this matter must register to testify by 5:00 pm on Friday, December 9, 2022 at: http://www.ChairmanMendelson.com.  If you cannot testify at the hearing, written statements are encouraged and will be made a part of the official record. Statements for the record should be submitted to[email protected] or left by voicemail by calling (202) 430-6948 (up to 3 minutes which will be transcribed). The record will close at 5:00 pm on December 23, 2022.

What matters most is that we honor the residents who want to see this change and want their street renamed without delay. Join us for the December 13th hearing and sign-up to speak on behalf of our Mayor for life, Marion S. Barry, Jr.

In solidarity,

Trayon White, Sr.
Councilmember, Ward 8
