As this year nears its end, the Grassley family is grateful for another fall harvest. Like other family farms across Iowa, our three-generation farming operation experiences many of the uncertainties blanketing our profession. Mounting pressures to pay the bills, get the crops out and make ends meet can overwhelm mental wellness. Senator Jon Tester and I introduced the Seeding Rural Resilience Act to help curb the rising rate of farmer suicides. Our bipartisan bill would empower people who are in a position to identify at-risk farmers to get them help. Read more in my op-ed here.
I recently had the opportunity to nominate 50 Iowa students to be considered for appointments to the U.S. service academies. These young Iowans who want to enter the academies and serve our country are a remarkable reflection on our state. Their accomplishments, leadership and desire to serve are exceptional, and signal continued excellence in the U.S. armed forces. More information about service academy nominations can be found here.
I co-founded the Senate Caucus on Foster Youth a decade ago to give voice to the thousands of young people in America who deserve a platform to break the silence on the challenges and success stories of foster care. Our caucus not only provides the platform; we encourage foster youth to participate and lead discussions on issues that matter most to them. It’s become a vital network for young people to connect with other youth in foster care and empowers them to share their ideas with researchers, advocates and lawmakers. All children deserve a safe, permanent, loving home and consistent, caring adults to parent them. Society owes a debt of gratitude for all those who work to achieve this goal.
