"Congratulations to those who accepted the invitation to rebuild our Brazil. Love won over hate. Long live democracy!"
– Joenia Wapichana, first Indigenous woman deputy
elected to the Brazilian National Congress
On Sunday, the people of Brazil voted for democracy, Indigenous rights, the future of the Amazon rainforest, and our climate. This is a win for the Indigenous peoples who fight for their rights and for the forest, and a win for you, who have acted in solidarity with these communities.
And just today a generous Amazon Watch donor reached out to offer to match all gifts up to $100,000 in celebration of this historic win.
In the coming months, Amazon Watch's international team will provide two critical areas of support to Indigenous peoples in Brazil. First, helping to ensure the safety and security of Indigenous Earth Defenders in Brazil. We will step up security measures, support Indigenous communities in registering the crimes that are expected to intensify, accompany Indigenous leaders to critical gatherings, and ensure freedom of movement for all Earth Defenders.
Secondly, we will work with Indigenous peoples to keep standing forests standing, reforest areas that have been wiped out, advance land demarcation to guarantee Indigenous land rights, and amplify the messages, voices, and solutions of Indigenous communities to global stages and media outlets.
We've arrived at a uniquely powerful moment in Brazilian and world history. You can be part of this future today with a gift of $5, $50, or $500, which will be matched up to $100,000. This is the moment that Indigenous peoples and allies throughout the world have worked towards. Make a gift today to create the future we know is possible.
Yours for the Amazon,
Leila Salazar-López
