Dear John,

Heads up — this is a lengthy personal email, but you’re so important to this work that I hope you’ll take a moment to read it all.

As we kick off November, I’ve been reflecting. It is hard for me to believe that we are in the final stage of the 2022 Election Cycle, our first cycle as an organization, two years in the making.

In some ways it feels like just yesterday that Megan and I were back and forth on phone calls, trying to get things up and running.

We started with a simple mission: to support ordinary, working, underpaid, and low-income people who want to run for office on progressive platforms.

Barrier To Entry PAC’s founding team of campaign professionals saw over and over, from campaign to campaign, how our electoral system favors the wealthy. Our team saw the damage it causes to our democracy when only the rich have the ability to run for office. We decided we might as well try to do something about it.

As we launched B/E PAC, we used data to tell this story, educate our allies, and define our mission. When we looked into campaign finance data publicly available on FEC.gov and saw the numbers in front of us, it felt like someone punched me in the stomach.
* In May 2021, the average amount of money a federal candidate gives to their own campaign is $637,246.33.
* This reminded me of an article I read that had said the average American would not know where to find $400 or more if they found themselves in an unexpected financial emergency.

So you tell me, who can run for office in this country?

The answer is very, very few people. And the sacrifice is enormous for those who run without personal wealth.

We knew we had our work cut out for us: breaking socioeconomic barriers that keep regular working-class candidates from running for office is not for the faint of heart.

With your help, we raised over $85,000 this cycle between Barrier To Entry PAC and its sister org, Pay Your Interns PAC, which we use to direct funds to support interns and staff on these campaigns.

Now, you probably want to know: Where did all your money go? We provided startup funds to help candidates running for local office on leftist platforms. We hustled to use the seed funding to produce a more sustainable income stream with a strong email fundraising program and by hosting more traditional grassroots events. We paid for mailers, digital ads, phonebanking, organizing, texting — all so our candidates could reach their voters and compete with their wealthy well-connected opponents. We paid for our candidates to staff up their campaigns with talented interns looking to enter politics. We paid for volunteer recruitment, campaign materials, office supplies, and more.

This money, the money YOU gave us, allowed us to do BIG things. Every single grassroots donation that we raised has made a difference. We have literally survived off of small dollar gifts. And it’s not too late for you to have an impact before the 2022 cycle ends — pitch in here right now to be a part of the change. ([link removed]) Everything we do here is a team effort. So when we say our movement is “people-powered”, we truly mean it. While our candidates push for systemic change from the inside to improve the lives of everyday people, our grassroots army digs in deep too, helping to forge the path for these trailblazers.

There are very real people behind these emails doing this work. To Megan and Jessi and Elizabeth and Jessica and Annie and EJ and Mel and Liz and Frances and Scott and Grace and Michelle and Jen — and everyone who contributed their hard work and time to B/E — thank you. To all of our partners — like Mike, Etana, and Heather at the IUE-CWA union, one of our largest contributors — thank you.

And of course, to our endorsed candidates, who are carefully selected: Thank you for running, and thank you for letting us be a part of it.

Their names are: Jessica Mason. Shaquana Boykin. Peter Schwartzman. Ed Gainey. Jared Grandy. Kimi Cole. Shenise Turner-Sloss. Angelina Jackson. Daniel Ortiz. Joe Thompson. Bria Bennett. Willie Roberts. Thank you.

These changemakers stand for universal healthcare. They’re for a Green New Deal. They’re bold. They’re diverse. Some are parents, some are students, some are Navy veterans, some are union workers. They’re young at heart. They’re cool. They’re funny. They’re normal people. They reflect and represent their communities. They lead and they steer, while we fuel the engine.

We have so much to be proud of, but the election cycle is not over just yet. We’ve still got so much on the line, particularly in Montgomery County, Ohio, where we are working to elect Angelina Jackson for Judge of Common Pleas. When elected, she will be the only Black woman sitting on a bench that is 90% white.

Montgomery County is a crucial area to protect abortion access in Ohio. As a judge, Angie will preside over abortion and abortion related crimes in the same area where the Kettering clinic provides critical care to the region— the same clinic where the 10 year old was turned away. Yeah, that clinic.

*Deep breath*

So yes, there’s a lot at stake. And we need to finish this cycle strong. You guys, we can do this. We’ve been doing it. Let’s push hard in these final days to get Angie elected for the people of Montgomery County. Let’s talk to every possible voter. Let’s do it for that 10 year old. Let’s do it for people who deserve a fair trial. Let’s do everything we can, knowing that at this moment in time, every single one of us is being called to step up.

At Barrier To Entry PAC, our candidates run to win. We need your help fueling this people-powered work. So please, would you consider making a contribution right now to help our candidates defeat the GOP’s far-right agenda in next week’s critical election?/strong> ([link removed])

You might be wondering why you should care, potentially being far away from some of these races. So before I let you go, I want to leave you with one question, which I feel really sums up our philosophy: If injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere, then could the inverse be just as true?

At Barrier To Entry PAC, we believe that injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere. We also believe that justice, meaningful justice anywhere, is justice everywhere. Justice is justice is justice, and light is light is light. That’s the spirit at the heart of this work.

With that question in mind, we’re coming to you again in this final stretch hoping that you’ll step up: Please, friends, will you chip in $27 or any amount today to join us in the fight for justice and help us build a government that works for real everyday working-class people?
