Disappointing news, John:

HEADLINE: Pennsylvania Supreme Court Says Mail-In Ballots Without Dates Should Not Be Counted -- The New York Times

In a 3-3 split ruling, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court just decided to make it harder for eligible voters to make their voices heard – over irrelevant technicalities – less than one week before the election.

This could very well change the outcomes of crucial races, and, as multiple courts had previously ruled, is a clear violation of the Civil Rights Act.

Like we’ve said all along, this will disproportionately disenfranchise young voters and voters of color, who are both more likely to vote by mail and to have their legitimate, on-time mail-in ballots rejected. Will you make a donation of $10 today to help us fight back and mobilize a response?

Until recently, both state and federal courts had ruled mail-in ballots without dates should be counted, for good reason: The Civil Rights Act clearly prohibits disenfranchising voters for minor errors that are not "material" to determining whether the voter is qualified to vote.

But all of a sudden, our courts have decided a date written on the outside of a ballot is worth disenfranchising eligible voters, despite obviously fitting the prohibitions established by the Civil Rights Act.

Now it’s up to organizations like ours to provide more civic engagement and education to ensure Pennsylvanians are completing their mail ballots accurately.

Help us ensure all voted ballots are counted.

John, this could not come at a worse time. Will you chip in $10 right now to help us overcome this blatant attack on our civil rights and get out the vote?

The New Pennsylvania Project was founded in May 2021 to expand Pennsylvania’s electorate, so it reflects the Commonwealth’s demographically changing population. In the next four years, NPP will engage and empower young residents and those living in underrepresented immigrant communities and communities of color. We register communities to vote, provide civic education about the issues that matter in their neighborhoods, and mobilize Pennsylvanians to vote in every election.
