Here's a quick update on what I've been working on during a busy few weeks in Washington, DC, Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn... HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE HILL READ MORE During my first term in Congress, my office has helped thousands of constituents cut through bureaucratic red tape & returned over $36 million to local organizations including the NYPD, local hospitals, St. George's Theatre, and the U.S. Coast Guard Sector New York. These funds will directly benefit the hardworking men and women of Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn. My first term in Congress has been nothing short of productive and I'm looking forward to building on these successes in a Republican-led Congress come January. I've joined Congressman Josh Gottheimer in formally calling for a Congressional oversight hearing and investigation into the MTA's mismanagement of $15 billion in federal funds. Taxpayers deserve answers, under oath, from the MTA on why billions of their hard-earned dollars have been squandered. The MTA should not be implementing its congestion tax - it should be getting its books in order! This project will generate power for almost two million homes in New York and New Jersey, create hundreds of good-paying union jobs, inject an estimated $410 million into our local economy during construction, and will create thousands more jobs and generate $750 million for our economy upon completion. New York is the only state that restricts Customs and Border Protection (CBP) access to their data, allowing transitional criminal organizations to steal our vehicles, drive them over the bridge to New Jersey, put them on the ports, and ship them out to wherever there's demand. The Green Light Law, coupled with New York's bail law has been a disaster for public safety and it's truly the cause of why we're seeing such a sharp uptick in car thefts across our community. We're calling on Governor Hochul to restore federal access to the DMV's database so DHS and CBP can do their jobs. With crime skyrocketing and drugs pouring into our communities, the last thing we need is illegal dispensaries popping up on our street corners - especially when the products they are selling aren't being regulated. The failure of our city to crack down on these illegal operations is putting the public's health and quality of life at risk and I join my local colleagues in pushing for them to be shut down immediately. On a breezy fall afternoon outside of Olive Tree Marketplace, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) talked about skyrocketing inflation and soaring energy costs. The Sunnyside grocery store seemed a fitting backdrop for her press conference, as its owner, David Shehadeh, drove home the impact high gasoline prices on his food operation β and ultimately, his customers.
