John
Above all else, I strive to uphold my oath of office and protect our rights, freedoms, and democracy in everything I do.
That includes standing in support of my colleagues on the January 6 Select Committee as they continue to uncover the full scope of the violent insurrection and attempts to overturn election results. They’re making important strides towards holding Donald Trump and all involved accountable.
While my Democratic colleagues continue their pursuit of justice, this week Justice Clarence Thomas ruled to temporarily shield Senator Lindsey Graham from being compelled to answer questions from a special grand jury in Georgia investigating efforts to overturn Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election.
Lindsey Graham must tell the full truth about his involvement in the Trump campaign’s efforts to influence Georgia election officials. He claims it was all part of his official “legislative duties” and therefore he should not have to comply with a subpoena – an excuse that is dubious, at best.
We already know that Clarence Thomas is far from impartial in this case as well. His wife Ginni not only attended the January 6th rally, but exchanged text messages with then-Trump Administration Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, echoing the radical Christian nationalist ideology that has violently divided the United States. Despite his wife’s involvement, Justice Thomas refuses to recuse himself from cases relating to the January 6th insurrection.
In short: A Justice who should not be on the Supreme Court is now covering for a senator who should not be in the Senate.
Thomas’ administrative stay is temporary, meaning that the full Supreme Court will likely weigh in on the matter in the coming weeks. Regardless of what the Court ultimately does, Justice Thomas should be held accountable for flouting any semblance of judicial ethics by participating in matters relating to the January 6th attacks.
If justice is truly to be served, the Court must remain impartial and unhindered by conflicts of interest.
If you agree, please add your name to join the call for Justice Thomas to recuse himself from any Court business relating to the insurrection or resign from the Court.
With the midterm election less than two weeks away, it stands to reason that we must have a simple, vital test for every candidate: will you uphold your oath to defend our democratic republic from all enemies, foreign or domestic – and did you do that in the face of the January 6th insurrection?
Thank you for helping protect our democracy,
Jared
