For people to play their role, they need skills and strategies grounded in effective prevention. With support from our partners and funders, we educate parents, teachers, young people, prevention professionals, and others in communities across the entire state of Ohio. Prevention isn’t easy. In fact, it can be challenging to implement proven prevention practices when you have limited resources and capacity. We empower a wide array of practicing prevention professionals in need of assistance and young leaders with a burning desire to give back to their communities. Addiction itself is an epidemic in the U.S., and Ohio has been hit particularly hard. Preventing addiction before it starts remains one of the best strategies for addressing this epidemic, yet it’s often underfunded, under supported, and underutilized by legislators and regulators. At Prevention Action Alliance, we support advocates throughout Ohio, providing them with resources and logistical aid. As always, I thank you for your support. Our impact on Ohio’s health has been powerful because of your support, whether it be financially, volunteering, or collaborating. Everyone has a role in prevention, and you are doing your part. I hope you'll read on below to see how we educate, empower, and advocate for prevention, and please consider joining us in this vital, life-saving work. For that, I thank you, Executive Director Join Prevention Action Alliance Educate More than 250 coalition leaders, parents, teachers, school officials, business leaders, and preventionists to support the wellbeing of young people and prevent substance misuse joined us at one of our three conferences—Coalitions Rising, the Ohio Adult Allies Summit, and the Prevention Action & Advocacy Summit on Vaping. They heard from a wide array of experts in prevention on topics such as preventing e-cigarette use through public policy, keeping cultural competency at the core of the work we do, and building resiliency among young people. Educate with Us Empower In collaboration with statewide partners, we successfully completed our first Mental Health First Aid Training series for legislative staff at the Ohio Statehouse. PAA coordinated a set of three trainings for legislative staff in an attempt increase the legislature’s mental health literacy given the direct constituent communication that all offices engage in and the role that they play in crafting mental health and substance use policy. Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour, evidence-based course that gives people the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it builds mental health literacy and helps trainees identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health issues. Empower with Us Advocate Legislative Day is annual event designed to help coalitions and other interested stakeholders advocate for prevention with state legislators. This year ninety participants from over 33 organizations came together to advocate for behavior health and prevention. Over 100 appointments were made with legislators at both the Ohio House and Senate. PAA educates and empowers these advocates by organizing this event, sending weekly legislative updates and providing a monthly webinar update and discussion. Advocating leads to systemic change that can powerfully impacts the health and well-being of all citizens. Advocate with Us Share this email with your friends! Questions? Comments? Suggestions?
