THE SOAPBOX seeks to keep you connected to what’s happening at The Union and share news about our work to oppose anti-democratic forces in America.
STATE OF THE UNION: With more than 26 million early votes cast, these midterms will shatter voter participation records. We can beat Trump and his cult with a strong get-out-the-vote sprint to Nov. 8. But no matter the outcome, the dangerous reality is that Trump and his cult will keep waving their authoritarian banners in a seditious lust for power in 2024.
There was a time, not all that long ago, when Election Day was a cause for celebration. Both sides, having made their case to voters in hard-fought campaigns, waited respectfully for all votes to be counted to find out who had won.
Concession speeches followed with pledges to work together to make America a better and stronger place. Al Gore’s concession to George Bush after the Supreme Court decision on that race and John McCain’s concession to Barack Obama are two to remember. Elections made America a beacon of liberty around the world. No more.
So, on Nov. 9, our work to stop Donald Trump and his election-denying cult must continue.
THE PLAYBOOK: In the remaining days until Nov. 8, our focus needs to be on voter turnout. Everything we’re doing is focused on motivating pro-democracy voters to get them to the polls. Younger voters are the top priority. Please look for opportunities to get involved in tomorrow’s state action emails. Every vote will make a difference, and every volunteer’s action gets us closer to victory.
- With early votes topping 26 million, it’s clear something different is in play in these midterms. This is our all-hands-on-deck moment.

THE PULSE: While threats to American democracy topped earlier polling, worries about the economy have reemerged as the dominant issue on voter’s minds. Economic concerns almost always hurt the party in power in midterm elections. Another factor for Democrats is apathy among younger voters. Unknown, however, is the effect record-setting early voting will have on the outcome.

The undeniable power of a single vote: It’s been a while since we’ve seen so many critical races with single digit polling margins. Our Action Center is tracking about 60 competitive races. Control of Congress and state offices that oversee elections hangs in the balance.
Every single vote matters
Debunking election myths: With Election Day less than a week away, here’s a good resource that refutes the most prevalent lies about voting that have gained traction on social media.
The truth about voting
Misinformation is damaging our democracy: We are all confronting a flood of misinformation today, most of it on social media. The echo chamber of bad information reinforces bias and prevents people from getting to the truth. Great majorities of voters on both sides say it increases extreme political views.
Misinformation fuels threats to democracy
America is hurtling toward political disintegration: The attempted murder of Paul Pelosi, husband of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is another disgusting outcome of the endless and vengeful attack on America democracy Trump unleashed in 2016. Threats against members of Congress have increased nearly 1000% since then, with 9,625 threats made just last year. Thousands of election workers have received threats during this midterm. And it will surely worsen when Trump declares another campaign for the White House.

How to find election deniers on your ballot: We’ve shared this before and wanted to share it again. The Washington Post put together a useful interactive tool to find out where election deniers are on the ballot near you. It is important information to have.

There are many too-close-to-call races: On Election Day there will likely be absentee ballots that are missing signatures and other required information. Many states give voters the opportunity to correct those errors so their ballots can be counted.

Early voting statistics: As absentee and early voting continues, it’s important to track how turnout is trending. Be sure to click on demographics – party ID, age, and gender. And check voting data in your state.

Cheney endorses Democrats: Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) appeared in a Cleveland Q&A with PBS NewsHour anchor Judy Woodruff to talk about the midterms. She urged sensible Republicans to support pro-democracy candidates like Tim Ryan and Elissa Slotkin. Pointing to election deniers, she emphasized, “You can’t give somebody power if they have told you they will only honor an election if they like the outcome, because that is how the republic unravels.”

Baseless challenges to voting are underway: It’s a classic tactic from Trump’s playbook: sue, distract, and delay. And it’s happening in key races as Trump extremists seek to destroy confidence in voting and replay their false claims of stolen elections. We’ll also see Trump extremists challenging individual voters as they cast ballots. The Voter Protection Hotline, 866-687-8683, is here to help.
Frivolous election lawsuits are already underway
