Liz Willen Dear reader,
Looking back is always part of end-of-year celebrations and reflections, and for me, that has meant rereading some of my favorite Hechinger Report stories and projects of 2019.
If you’re concerned about college costs, you’ll appreciate the chance to get educated by spending some time with our newly revamped tuition tracker. ([link removed]) And for a close look at some possible solutions, read about what California is trying. ([link removed]) This year, we also reported on good news ([link removed]) for music lovers, bad news for for-profit schools ([link removed]) and the pros and cons of a new charter school ([link removed]) in the Mississippi Delta. And we told a powerful story of how it is never too late ([link removed]) to get an education, no matter the obstacles.
One of the stories I found most moving ([link removed]) was our piece on Taheem, a 12-year-old boy attending a school that’s almost entirely black and poor in one of the most dangerous cities in the nation. I also highly recommendour reporting ([link removed]) from three counties in the rural South with high numbers of adults who lack a high school credential, where community members are trying to help more people obtain this essential first step to the middle class.
I have many more favorites, but would love to hear some of yours, and look forward to sharing again in 2020. Make sure you never miss another story by becoming a Hechinger Report member ([link removed]) . Happy New Year!
Liz Willen, Editor
