Hi John.
Kansas has a long, proud, and bipartisan agricultural tradition – and that’s as it should be.
A great example of that strong tradition is our recently retired Senator, Pat Roberts. He was the first person to chair both the House and Senate Agriculture Committees.
I’m honored to continue that bipartisan tradition now in my new role – serving you on the House Agriculture Committee.
This is an important position to help support our local economy, create jobs, and lower grocery prices. Click here to learn more about it.
Earlier this year, I brought U.S. Department of Agriculture Under Secretary Jenny Moffitt to the Kansas Third District so she could learn more about our region’s agricultural needs firsthand. During her visit, we toured National Beef’s processing plant in Kansas City, Kansas.
On the Agriculture Committee, my top priority is lowering the cost of groceries for hardworking Kansans. That includes lowering meat and poultry prices, which I know a lot of folks are struggling with these days.
That’s why I joined with other Kansas lawmakers in a bipartisan push for investigations into anti-competitive behavior in the meatpacking industry. Additionally, I voted for a law that's supporting independent meatpackers to increase competition and lower prices. This strategy is supported by the Kansas Farm Bureau, Kansas Livestock Association, and the Kansas Farmers Union.
As I keep working to lower costs, remember that you can always access resources on my website to help you – including for groceries.
I was honored to receive the “Friend of the Farm Bureau” award for my service on behalf of Kansas agriculture earlier this year.
Anything is possible when Kansans work together. That’s why I was also glad to work in a bipartisan coalition – including partnering with former Senator Pat Roberts and lawmakers in both parties in Kansas and Missouri – to bring hundreds of USDA jobs to the KC Metro and help support our region’s economy.
Together, we worked with President Trump’s Secretary of Agriculture to relocate two key federal research agencies to our region.
This relocation wasn’t a popular idea with most Democrats. It certainly wasn’t popular with my party’s leaders. But it was the right thing to do for Kansas.
I was honored to serve alongside former Kansas Senator Pat Roberts.
Agriculture is the largest part of our state’s economy. The 2017 Ag Census from the Department of Agriculture highlights Kansas as one of the top 5 states in market value of agricultural products sold.
In our region, there are more than 1,100 farm operations in Johnson, Wyandotte, and Miami counties. Many are family farms and small businesses that play a vital role in our state’s economy. This all makes it incredibly important for Kansans to work together and do the right thing for our state.
That’s why I’ve been glad to help secure federal support for some of our rural agricultural producers to help them expand their operations.
And next year, the House and Senate are due to consider a major piece of legislation – the 2023 Farm Bill – that decides much of the federal government’s approach to agriculture and nutrition programs. I’m looking forward to this opportunity to strengthen our agriculture economy and amplify the voices of Kansans.
As this critical work continues, it’s important to me to listen and stay in touch with our local farmers, ranchers, and producers. If you have anything to share on these issues, please feel free to contact me. My door is always open to you.
Please feel free to forward this message to anyone you know.
My warmest regards,
Sharice L. Davids Member of Congress
