Education Funding: Spotlight on Mentoring Leader
New York&rsquo;s Mercy College shines a spotlight on Mirian Zavala, DNS, RN, a visiting professor of nursing and one of the activity directors for the Department of Education&rsquo;s 2020 grant that helps Hispanic and low-income students succeed in the health field. Zavala, who is on AARP&rsquo;s New York executive council, also is part of the Campaign for Action&rsquo;s mentoring program and is an NCLEX trainer.

Naylor Earns Lienhard Award From NAM
For her leadership in &ldquo;improving the lives of millions of older adults living with complex health and social needs,&rdquo; the National Academy of Medicine has chosen Campaign friend Mary Naylor, PhD, RN, FAAN, to receive the 2022 Gustav O. Lienhard Award for Advancement of Health Care. Naylor, the Marian S. Ware Professor in Gerontology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, is a pioneer in the field of transitional care.

Health Equity Innovations Fund RFP released &ndash; Applications due Nov 15
The AARP Center for Health Equity through Nursing and the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action released a call for proposals to fund efforts to eliminate structural racism and other structural inequities within the nursing profession, health systems or community that lead to improved access to care and services for those most disproportionally impacted by health disparities. Awards of up to $50,000 will be given. Applications are due November 15, 2022.


Projects that demonstrate collaboration with the Campaign for Action&rsquo;s state-based Action Coalitions will be viewed more favorably.

The Administration for Community Living has granted $6 million to establish a national center to strengthen America&rsquo;s direct care workforce&mdash;those who provide care in private homes, residential care homes, nursing homes, and other settings, including hospitals. Funds Offered to Organizations To Help Ease Nursing Shortage
Institutions with programs that can help increase the number of nursing educators and expand and diversify the pipeline of nursing professionals are invited to apply for the U.S. Department of Labor&rsquo;s new Nursing Expansion Grant Program, which offers $80 million to help ease America&rsquo;s nursing shortage. One aim is to increase the number of educators; the second, to advance nurses in their educations and careers. Applications are due by January 6.

The American Nurses Association seeks partners in its efforts to teach the fundamentals of infection prevention and control. ANA is offering grants of $10,000 to organizations that can be part of Project Firstline, whose goal is to teach health care workers with a better understanding of ways to protect against infectious disease.
