I'm sure you were just as shocked by the horrific attack on Speaker Pelosi's husband Paul as I was. The assailant was looking for Nancy, tried to zip-tie Paul, and then bashed his head with a hammer. This was clearly an?assassination attempt.



But I'm also sad this violence isn't more surprising -- just as I wasn't surprised by January 6th.? This is what happens when we're taught that those who disagree with us are existential threats to our survival; when we label our own tribe good and the other evil; when we fail to call out the bad behavior of our own "side" out of loyalty or denial.



The attack on Nancy's family hits too close to home.? My own family receives a near constant stream of death threats.? Standing for truth and defending democracy have labeled me a "traitor" (although they often spell it "trader") for many in my tribe. And, of course, the unhinged always take it a step too far.



But I swore an Oath -- when I signed up to serve our nation in the military and in Congress -- and I'm not going to abandon it now.



That's why Country First is working overtime across the country to educate and mobilize voters in support of our Defenders of Democracy <[link removed]> endorsement slate.?Last week, I hosted an awesome #Vote4Democracy Rally with some big guests that was seen by over 20,000 Americans!

But no matter what happens a week from today, there's going to be plenty of work to do. There's a good chance Donald Trump will run for President; there's a good chance Republicans in Congress will double-down on him; there's a good chance we'll feel more divided and less hopeful than ever... if we had to wait two years to channel our energy and efforts again.



And that's where this movement and the reasonable majority we're attracting will play a critical role in correcting course and casting a vision for what our country can be when we focus on standing for truth, solving problems, and mending division.? We will defend democracy; we will save this country.



After all, what other choice do we have?? Thank God we still have the chance to choose.
