MISSILE DEFENSE MONDAYS

October 25 - October 31, 2022

THE WEEK IN BRIEF

On Tuesday, October 25, Raytheon Technologies delivered two sophisticated NASAMS air defense systems for Ukraine to the United States government, its chief executive said Tuesday. The Norwegian-developed weapons will provide medium- to long-range defense against Russian attacks, which bombarded Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure over the last two weeks, including its power grid, using missiles and drones

On Thursday, October 27, after six months of delays, the Biden administration released the unclassified version of its National Defense Strategy — and despite Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the department remains confident the long-term threat lies not in Moscow, but in Beijing. The focus on China as the larger threat — as opposed to a joint focus on China and Russia — is one of the biggest ways the latest National Defense Strategy diverges from its predecessor, a senior defense official told reporters ahead of the official rollout.

On Friday, October 28, The Biden administration planned to advance its defense ties with India to enhance its ability to deter Chinese aggression and address gray zone coercion in areas such as disputed land boarders, as per the US National Defense Strategy released on Thursday. This newly released document which was released by the US Defense Department is an unclassified defense strategy that nests beneath President Biden’s National Security Strategy, which was released earlier this month among growing Chinese aggression.

Also on Friday, Ukraine announced that it has shot down more than 300 Iranian Shahed-136 ‘kamikaze’ drones so far, air force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat told a briefing. The drones have become a key weapon in Russia’s arsenal during its war in Ukraine and have often been used in the past month to target crucial energy infrastructure.
