John, Since the 2020 election, the landscape of voting rights has drastically shifted. State legislatures have introduced hundreds of bills designed to restrict voting rights, with 19 states signing 34 of these measures into law. Election deniers continue to spread the “Big Lie” that the results of the last presidential election are illegitimate, and that Big Lie has fueled the passage of new voter suppression laws at the state level. Here at Free Speech For People, we’re doing everything we can to protect the right to vote and to make sure every person has a voice in our democracy. That includes legal challenges to voter suppression laws in Arizona and Texas. And it includes a legal challenge in Colorado to a door-to-door voter intimidation campaign led by an extremist group with ties to QAnon and the January 6th insurrection. But to make this work possible, we need your help. Will you chip in what you can today to ensure every American can vote? Through our legal initiatives, Free Speech For People remains committed to realizing a democracy where every voice and every vote counts: - Challenging SB1 in Texas: Last year, we filed a lawsuit on behalf of Mi Familia Vota and individual voters challenging Senate Bill 1 (SB1) in Texas. SB1 blatantly targets voters of color and others from marginalized communities in a number of ways that place undue burdens on voters. We won a significant court victory in August when the federal court in San Antonio ruled our lawsuit can proceed, bringing us one step closer to ending this blatant attack on voting rights.
- Taking on voter suppression in Arizona: We’ve partnered with the Campaign Legal Center in a new lawsuit challenging two voter suppression laws passed by the Arizona legislature this year. These laws were designed to purge voter rolls and restrict access to the ballot for Native American voters by requiring documented proof of residency. And, we continue to litigate a lawsuit we filed last year on behalf of a coalition of voting rights groups in Arizona, challenging voter suppression laws passed by the Arizona legislature in the prior legislative session.
- Fighting voter intimidation in Colorado: On behalf of the NAACP of Colorado, League of Women Voters of Colorado, and Mi Familia Vota, we are litigating a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of Colorado against the United States Election Integrity Plan (USEIP), an extremist organization engaged in an illegal voter intimidation campaign in Colorado. USEIP’s actions, which are particularly damaging to communities of color, violate both the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871.
We’ve made great strides to date to ensure that every person has an equal voice and an equal vote, but so much remains to be done. With Election Day upon us, it’s imperative that we do everything in our power to continue to protect the right to vote.
