Dear Friend,
Happy New Year's Eve! It's hard to believe that today is the final day of a decade, isn't it?
We'll be real with you: we don't enjoy asking for money any more that you likely enjoy being asked. And we know that you're likely receiving lots of requests from other organizations at this time of year, too. So if you have put up with our fundraising appeals over the past month and are sticking with us, THANK YOU.
So why do we ask for money? Because, quite simply, without the financial support of more than a thousand donors contributing what they can, the Green Party of PEI would literally shrivel and die. And to those who have worked so hard to get to this point, that would be unacceptable. The stakes are too high. So here's our pitch:
The 2020s have already been given a moniker: the Decisive Decade. Ours will not be the Roaring Twenties, but rather the decade that many believe will decide such fundamental questions as "Will we be able to hold global temperature increase to no more than 1.5 degrees?", "Will liberal democracy survive?", and even: "Will human civilization survive the century?"
Greens, here and around the world, have been urging humanity to take decisive steps for the good of our collective future for decades. Today, on the threshold of the Decisive Decade, the Green Party is finally poised to play a decisive role in ensuring that we take the path to a better, not bleaker, future. We are realistic about the challenges ahead, but choose hope.
Already, we are making a difference. As one example, in a global age of divisive, retrograde politics, the Guardian (our Guardian!) announced that their 2019 PEI news story of the year was "The Spirit of Collaboration in PEI Politics <[link removed]>". And earlier this year, Greens rallied MLAs from all parties, including the Premier, to adopt the most ambitious climate targets in Canada. Last week, after months of work behind the scenes, the PC government and Green Official Opposition jointly announced a 50% increase in food allowances for people in need of social assistance - making a huge difference to those who have struggled to make ends meet enough to feed themselves and their families.
In a CBC article <[link removed]> yesterday, Mark Jaccard of Simon Fraser University, one of the architects of British Columbia's pioneering carbon tax, is quoted as saying that "the most important place for concerned citizens to invest in stopping climate change is political action."
We believe that you will find no better bang for your buck in strengthening our democracy, fighting climate change and creating a more just society than investing in a strong, vibrant Green Party of Prince Edward Island that has shown that it can not only do so much as Official Opposition, but can one day soon form the government of Prince Edward Island.
Tonight at midnight is the deadline to make an online donation to the Green Party of PEI and receive a 2019 tax receipt. Will you make an investment into our continued work today?
