Dear John, It is with great excitement that we share with you our 2022 WOLA Human Rights Awards Ceremony and Benefit Gala video. After hosting the gala virtually for two years, we returned in person at long last. We are honored to have been able to celebrate the amazing work that our 2022 honorees have accomplished. This year we honored: -
Representative Joaquin Castro (D – TX 20th District), for his unwavering commitment to human rights, particularly to the rights of migrants and refugees at the U.S.-Mexico border; ,
- David Morales, Salvadoran human rights lawyer at Cristosal, who prosecuted the El Mozote massacre case, which brought 17 ex-military officers to justice;
-
The Maya Q’eqchi’ women of Sepur Zarco, a group of indigenous Guatemalan women who faced sexual violence and domestic slavery at the hands of Guatemalan military in the 1980’s and won their historic trial in 2016, and the Maya Achi women of Rabinal, a group of indigenous Guatemalan women who faced sexual violence and domestic slavery at the hands of Guatemalan paramilitaries during the 1980’s and won their historic trial in 2022 for their resilience, determination and firm will in the search for justice, truth and reparation despite the obstacles imposed and the systemic impunity that characterizes their cases.
