Friends,

I want to tell you a story about a family, and a boy – a story I think is unique to California. I want to tell you my story. 

My story starts in another country, the Philippines, where perhaps one of the most important decisions in my life wasn’t made by me, it was made about me – by my parents Cynthia and Warren. When I was born, my parents had to make a decision. They wanted their son to grow up in a place with democracy, the rule of law, human rights, civil rights, and due process.

They looked out into the future and didn’t see those things for me in the Philippines — and they were right. All of those things were gone by my first birthday, when a dictator rose to power and declared martial law.

So my parents traveled across an ocean and brought me to California to raise me. They thought that here I could pursue my dreams and realize my full potential. 

As a boy, I joined my mother at an untold number of protests, rallies, and demonstrations, speaking out against the human rights abuses and destruction of democracy in the Philippines – until in 1986, as a teenager, the People Power Revolution toppled a dictator and restored democracy back to the Philippines.

I saw the power that people can have when we stand together, and the impact we can make on each others’ lives – and I knew I wanted to spend my life making that impact. I dedicated my career to public service in order to lift others up the way I have been lifted up, the way I know we can all lift each other up.

I want to continue this fight – and today, I’m asking you to join me. Election Day is just around the corner, and I know that together, we can do more.
