 Thank you for 2019

Dear Friend,
Salam, Peace

Thank you for your continued support for the Muslim Council of Britain in what has been an extremely busy year in 2019. Here are some of the highlights:

Proudly Muslim & Black Symposium

We started the year by exploring the history and heritage of African and Afro-Caribbean Muslim communities in Britain and beyond at an inaugural conference in February, as well as celebrating Black History Month in October. Look out for more events and a new report on this topic in 2020.

#VisitMyMosque Day 2019

In March we facilitated the fifth national #VisitMyMosque Day (www.visitmymosque.org), this year in collaboration with the national charity Keep Britain Tidy to highlight the Islamic perspective on taking care of the environment.

250 mosques across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland took part. The next #VisitMyMosque day is set for 21 June 2020 - register online today!

With rising Islamophobia, MCB also facilitated Muslim community faith leaders' visits to Churches, Synagogues, Mandirs and Gurdwaras in Belfast, London, Cardiff and Glasgow respectively on 26 February ahead of the national #VisitMyMosque Day on 3 March.

Responding to the New Zealand Islamophobic attacks

Following the horrific and cowardly Islamophobic terrorist attacks at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, the MCB responded by calling for urgent action by the UK Government to tackle Islamophobia, issuing practical security guidance to mosques and providing 14 recommendations on the Home Office's scheme for improving security at Places of Worship.

Women in Leadership

On 31 March we held the inaugural MCB Women's Conference to give a platform to a diversity of women and to empower the voices of Muslim women in our communities and organisations. The day also saw the launch of the 2019 Women in Mosques Development Programme.

Greener Ramadan Iftars

As the Month of Ramadan started and in the year of the opening of Europe's first Eco-Mosque in Cambridge, we celebrated MCB affiliates and other mosques going green for their Iftar programmes, including York Mosque, Green Lane Masjid, Cheadle Mosque Association, East London Mosque and the Sultan Bahu Trust .

A workshop was also held in July on single-use plastic free iftars - download slides here.

More efforts needed to tackle Islamophobia

At the MCB's 10th annual Muslim Leadership Dinner in June, calls for stronger efforts to tackle Islamophobia were made from the MCB Secretary General Harun Khan, as well as keynote speaker Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.

The MCB continued its campaign for an independent inquiry into Islamophobia within the Conservative Party in addition to Conservative politicians, including submitting a formal complaint to the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). More widely, the MCB delivered written and oral evidence to the Home Affairs Select Committee on Islamophobia and other Parliamentary select committees.

Launch of the Centre for Media Monitoring

The launch of the MCB's Centre for Media Monitoring (CfMM), was held on 9 July in the Houses of Parliament, and attended by editors of The Sun and The Express newspapers. It also coincided with the release of the CfMM's first report into the state of media coverage around Muslims and Islam. Discover more about CfMM including free media training available for MCB affiliates at www.cfmm.org.uk

Launch of Eldery & End-of-Life Care Report

August saw the launch of MCB's groundbreaking report into the state of elderly and end of life care in Muslim communities to a packed audience at City Hall, London. The report found, among other things that the number of Muslims aged 65+ years old is estimated to increase from 110,000 in 2011, to 450,000 by 2036. #OurYouthOurFuture National Mosque Conference

Over 500 mosque leaders and volunteers from across the country from diverse backgrounds, as well as over 25 exhibitors, gathered at Leicester City FC stadium in October to discuss how we can make our mosques more relevant and appealing to our youth at the national Our Mosques Our Future conference. Living Wage: Muslim Groups Urged to Join

As part of Living Wage week from 11-17 November 2019, the MCB urged Muslim institutions across the UK to tackle in-work poverty by becoming accredited Living Wage employers. Read the Secretary General's opinion piece on the importance of paying the Living Wage to your employees.

Launch of Top 10 Pledges for British Muslims

Ahead of the December 2019 General Elections, the MCB launched its Top 10 Key Pledges, which was developed through a holistic analysis of the priorities of MCB Affiliates following the surveying of over 500 British Muslims.
