Thank you for your continued support for the Muslim Council of Britain in what has been an extremely busy year in 2019. Here are some of the highlights:
In March we facilitated the fifth national #VisitMyMosque Day (www.visitmymosque.org), this year in collaboration with the national charity Keep Britain Tidy to highlight the Islamic perspective on taking care of the environment.
250 mosques across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland took part. The next #VisitMyMosque day is set for 21 June 2020 - register online today!
With rising Islamophobia, MCB also facilitated Muslim community faith leaders' visits to Churches, Synagogues, Mandirs and Gurdwaras in Belfast, London, Cardiff and Glasgow respectively on 26 February ahead of the national #VisitMyMosque Day on 3 March.
Responding to the New Zealand Islamophobic attacks
On 31 March we held the inaugural MCB Women's Conference to give a platform to a diversity of women and to empower the voices of Muslim women in our communities and organisations. The day also saw the launch of the 2019 Women in Mosques Development Programme.
Greener Ramadan Iftars
As the Month of Ramadan started and in the year of the opening of Europe's first Eco-Mosque in Cambridge, we celebrated MCB affiliates and other mosques going green for their Iftar programmes, including York Mosque, Green Lane Masjid, Cheadle Mosque Association, East London Mosque and the Sultan Bahu Trust .
A workshop was also held in July on single-use plastic free iftars - download slides here.
More efforts needed to tackle Islamophobia
At the MCB's 10th annual Muslim Leadership Dinner in June, calls for stronger efforts to tackle Islamophobia were made from the MCB Secretary General Harun Khan, as well as keynote speaker Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.
As part of Living Wage week from 11-17 November 2019, the MCB urged Muslim institutions across the UK to tackle in-work poverty by becoming accredited Living Wage employers. Read the Secretary General's opinion piece on the importance of paying the Living Wage to your employees.
Launch of Top 10 Pledges for British Muslims
Ahead of the December 2019 General Elections, the MCB launched its Top 10 Key Pledges, which was developed through a holistic analysis of the priorities of MCB Affiliates following the surveying of over 500 British Muslims.
