State and Local Working Group
|
As election season draws ever closer, why not come out to a State & Local Working Group meeting? This is where we put DSA's values into practice through policy, message, and electoral work. Until the revolution happens (and probably after that), there will always be things we can fight to improve in our city and state.
This meeting is open to members and non-members alike. If you're interested in policy work, learning about how things get done in our city, county, and state, and want to be part of envisioning how we can build a better world, come out!

General Convention Fundraising! Less Than A Week Away!
|
The National Convention is less than a week away! Because of you, our DSA chapter is sending 11 delegates to the 2019 DSA National Convention. The convention will be the largest gathering of American Socialists in modern times and will set the national agenda for the next two years. As a working-class organization, many of us live on small budgets and can’t afford to attend the convention on our own - but this shouldn’t be a barrier to participation.
We need your help to cover $6,000 in travel costs for our delegates, and we still need a lot of support. Please give a solidarity gift today of $25, $50, or $100 today here. Thank you for your support! If you've already given, thank you! We could still use some more donations to offset our travel costs. If you haven't, please consider it! The convention is less than two weeks away. Giving financially is an act of solidarity, and we appreciate it.

Last Sunday's Medicare for All Canvass was a great success! In fact, it went so well, we're running it back and canvassing the same area August 11th! Keep an eye out for more information on that.
Reading Group had a great discussion of Samuel Stein's book Capital City! I hope y'all made it out for that. On August 12, they will be meeting again to read the last chapter of Bhaskar Sunkara's The Socialist Manifesto, as well as an essay by Patrick Wolfe to round out the discussion. If you need a non-distributional pdf of either of these please send out an email, or join the Political Education channel on Mattermost.
The Events Committee had their innaugural meeting! The purpose of the committee is to be a resource and knowledge base for whenever a member wants to throw an event. This includes anything and everything, from regular events like generals or offical events like town halls, to casual events like socials. If you'd like to help set up how-to guides for the many events we'd love to host, come on out to their next meeting!
On Thursday, we had an exploratory meeting for chapterwide campaign around prison abolition. The discussion we had was reflective of our successes, particularly around the Franklin Bynum electoral campaign, informative of the reality in Harris County, and productive around winnable issues for our chapter. We will certainly continue to meet and develop our strategy further, so keep an eye out for this great way anyone can immediately plug in to the work out chapter is doing!
The Membership Committee met to discuss ways of envigorating our membership, especially in regards to those outside of the loop. They talked about how to better use our membership lists, as well as potential carpooling solutions to solve the problems inherent in our massive city. This work is incredibly vital to sustaining the quality of our work as we grow as a chapter. Please keep an ey out for the next meeting and get involved!
