John — Election Day is fast approaching, and we wanted to make sure you saw the email we sent a few days ago about our plans for the final push. — Robert Reich
My friends, with only 9 days left until these crucial midterm elections, I have some good news, and I have some bad news.
The good news is that three-quarters of the American people now say that corporate price-gouging is responsible for inflation. This is proof that our efforts to educate the public about the causes of inflation are working.
Now here’s the bad news: Those same voters report that they trust Republicans over Democrats to handle inflation by a nine-point margin.
If we’re going to stop the MAGA Republicans from taking over Congress and our elections, we must change those numbers. We’ve done the hard part, educating voters about complicated economic forces driving inflation. Now we must close the deal and convince people to vote for the candidates who will actually do something about it.
That’s why Inequality Media Civic Action is launching a new series of viral videos and explainers to fill the messaging gap on inflation, and creatively repurposing existing content that has been proven to be effective. But to ramp up our operations for the final push before Election Day, we need your help.
Will you rush a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action and help fill the messaging gap on inflation before it’s too late?
This is a question I grapple with regularly: How is it possible that so many voters correctly blame inflation on corporate price-gouging and also think Republicans — party of tax cuts for the rich — are the party to fix it?
A huge part of the problem is that the corporate media is failing us. Partly it’s the ungodly amount of money that Republican super PACs are spending on ads.
But we also must face the fact that Democrats simply aren’t making the case for what they will do to solve the problem, including tougher antitrust enforcement, banning stock buybacks, and a tax on windfall profits.
It’s what I call the “messaging gap.” Republicans are pounding the issue of inflation, and Democrats haven’t responded effectively. And at a time when 6 in 10 voters say that cost of living is their number one concern, that messaging gap could be fatal.
That’s where we come in. The team at Inequality Media Civic Action has spent years developing the most effective strategies for reaching audiences directly through social media without spending tens of millions on ads. We know it works because it’s how we helped to convince the public that corporate price-gouging is causing inflation.
We still have time to turn this election around. Millions of voters remain undecided, and those are the people who will decide this election. But we need to ramp up our messaging operation to reach them now.
Please make a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action and help us fill the absolutely critical messaging gap on inflation before it’s too late.
Thank you for helping us fill in the gap,
Robert Reich
