As you know, my wife, Carol, prepares a monthly prayer alert. I hope you will share Carol's thoughts with your friends and fellow worshipers. Thank you for taking an interest in her monthly devotion. -- Gary

With the key midterm elections less than two weeks away, Washington is immersed in last-minute fundraising appeals, targeted ad buys, implementation of Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) efforts, handwringing and second-guessing, topped off with never-ending spin. Though a change in the national direction seems more likely than it did a couple weeks ago, the only thing that counts is the final results, not polling we see now.

In general, it seems as if there is a broad sense of discontent and worry about where the country is headed. The trusted question of "are you better off now than you were two years ago" seems to be moving the electorate beyond typical partisan boundaries.

As a result, the Biden White House has gone into flailing mode -- throwing a list of issues, programs and events at the wall hoping that one will hit a nerve and change the trajectory.

From student loan payment buyouts to blame game accusations on inflation to interviewing trans activists at the White House and declaring it is the right of children to permanently mutilate themselves to a high-speed car demo with Jay Leno and complaints about “racist” airplane seats ([link removed]) . . . Joe Biden careens from one hot button issue to the inane.

In his bumbling manner, he leaves the impression that if he were asked a tough question, away from his large-print note cards ([link removed]) , he could not answer. (When I was in school those would have been called "cheat sheets.")

He's making few campaign stops because the invites are just not rolling in. And those he does do are scripted and leave no opportunity for unplanned encounters or even typical press inquiries.

Just a few months ago, the Democrat Party seemed to be turning the right to kill unborn babies into a winning issue with dire warnings to female voters who they thought would be single-issue voters. Now those same women have prioritized inflation, crime and the border as their top issues, and Democrat answers to these concerns come across as out-of-touch.

They either don't acknowledge that they are a problem for average voters or they adroitly place the blame everywhere but on themselves. The widespread nature of the problem was brought home to me recently when I heard a happy talk radio ad about a family having cereal for dinner! Food prices for nutritious fruits, vegetables and protein are making healthy eating impossible for many families.

Election Day 2022 looms ahead of us. Early voting is underway in many states, and turnout is generally higher than usual. But lots of people like to vote the old-fashioned way -- in person on Election Day. For them D-Day is November 8th!

What can you do to magnify attention on our shared Biblical values beyond your single vote? Plenty!

1. Most importantly, seek a quiet space and thank our Heavenly Father for being born in a country where you have a voice in the future we will hand over to our children and grandchildren. America's freedoms are a light to the rest of the world. We must preserve them.

A failing America would lead to untold horrors across the globe. Thank God for His guiding hand on our country and for the privilege of being born here.

2. Go to the Word for inspiration and to refresh your mind on God's priorities. From the Ten Commandments to the teachings of Jesus, we can peer into the heart and mind of God and how He would have us live.

Then, take those guideposts and, with wisdom and discernment, apply them to the issues and candidates that are on your ballot. Do your own research from trusted sources or take the lead from someone more involved who shares your priorities.

Most importantly, DO NOT sit on the sidelines and watch.

3. Pray for all the candidates that they would be straightforward and honest in presenting their views. Watch debates, read literature and come to an educated conclusion on who deserves your precious vote. Think of your children and grandchildren and the country they will inherit as you make your decision. You are charting the course for decades to come.

4. Ask your pastor if he intends to encourage the congregants to exercise their right to vote. Will an announcement be made from the pulpit, in the bulletin or by video? Check out this 30-second video ([link removed]) from MyFaithVotes.org for an easy way to get the message out.

If there is no encouragement to vote, why not? American churches that refuse to acknowledge there is a cultural war going on are ceding the battlefield to forces who want the church silenced.

5. Once you have reached your decision, make it a point to seek out others of like mind. Have they voted or do they plan to? Do they need a ride to the polls? Does the young mother on your street need you to care for her children for an hour so she can vote? Does your local party or candidate need help at the polls or in another capacity on Election Day?

Everyone knows people who share their priorities but are just turned off by politics for a number of reasons. Engage them in a conversation in the political or cultural sphere and guide them to the conclusion that their vote does count.

Opportunities to converse can range from after church to a neighborhood get together watching a game to the soccer game sidelines. Did you know that one-third of all professing Christians in the United States do not vote?

Our right to freely practice and live out our faith is in jeopardy. We must do what we can to protect this right guaranteed to us at our founding.

6. Pray that this election cycle would be fair, honest, safe and absent glitches that would give rise to results that cannot be trusted. Ask God to shine sunlight on the process from beginning to end.

7. Lastly, VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! If you think you may be unable to vote on Election Day, make plans now to vote early.

Thank you!
