Dear Neighbor,

I hope this finds you and your loved ones well. I wanted to share a few important updates and upcoming deadlines regarding President Biden’s student debt cancellation plan.

Student Debt Cancellation Across Massachusetts

This past week, Senator Elizabeth Warren and I visited communities across Massachusetts to celebrate the Biden administration’s student debt cancellation plan and joined advocates to help residents sign up for student loan relief. According to official estimates released by the White House, approximately 813,000 Massachusetts borrowers are eligible for debt cancellation, including 101,800 borrowers in the Massachusetts 7th Congressional District.

Alongside Massachusetts students, borrowers, advocates and elected officials, we visited the Grove Hall Branch of the Boston Public Library in Dorchester, Massasoit Community College in Brockton, UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester, and Springfield Technical Community College in Springfield.

After years of advocacy from Senator Warren and I, in partnership with Congressional colleagues and alongside borrowers, advocates and organizers, the Biden-Harris Administration announced a plan to cancel student debt that stands to benefit over 40 million people.

Eligible borrowers can receive up to $20,000 in debt cancellation if they were Pell Grant recipients and up to $10,000 in debt cancellation for non-Pell Grant recipients.

President Biden’s student debt cancellation plan is historic and will send ripples forward for generations, which is why, in partnership with community, we’ve been calling for it to be implemented swiftly, efficiently, and equitably so that everyone eligible can access this critical relief.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness Waiver

The deadline to apply for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Waiver is Monday, October 31, 2022.

Nurses, teachers, firefighters, government employees, and other borrowers who work in public service may be eligible to receive credit for payments they previously didn’t qualify for or for Temporary Expanded Public Service Loan Forgiveness (TEPSLF). Those borrowers can also consolidate previously ineligible loans into eligible direct loans but you have to act by October 31.
