Dear
SPUC supporter,
On 18 October, in an outrageous assault on civil liberties, MPs voted by 297 votes to 110 to add an amendment introducing buffer zones to the Public Order Bill. This amendment will make it illegal to interfere “with any person's decision to access, provide, or facilitate the provision of abortion services in that buffer zone” – an offence punishable by up to 2 years in prison.
The Bill, including the amendment, will now be scrutinised by the House of Lords. It comes up for Second Reading on Tuesday 1 November.
The buffer zones amendment introduced by Stella Creasy in the Commons is now Clause 9 of the Public Order Bill. The Government has admitted that this clause means that the Bill is now incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights.
Please write to members of the House of Lords, asking them to vote against Clause 9, and, if necessary, the whole bill.
We have created this tool to enable you to send an editable template message to three members of the House of Lords. Just enter your details, edit the template as you see fit, and press “send message”. Your message will then be sent to the three peers.
Please act NOW – this is our last chance to stop buffer zones in Parliament. Once you have sent the message, please share this tool with others.
Best wishes,
Alithea Williams
Public Policy Manager
