Good afternoon, South Florida! Read my newsletter for this week! FL-27 Newsletter Vol. 117, Issue #65 Happy Friday, South Florida! In October, I continued to work hard each and every day on behalf of Florida's 27th District. This Hispanic Heritage Month, I was especially proud to celebrate the achievements of Miami's Hispanic and Latino communities. I look forward to addressing your cases, reading your letters, and responding to your social media comments. Please let me know what your thoughts are and never hesitate to reach out to my office. My team is more than happy to assist with your concerns and guide you through challenges you may have with federal agencies. It is truly the honor of a lifetime to fight for YOU in the halls of Congress! Advocating for Cuban Refugees Recently, Representative Salazar met with several families of Cuban refugees detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a routine check-in at the ICE facility in Miramar. Amid signs of rapprochement and warming relations between President Biden's Administration and the Diaz-Canel regime, Representative Salazar and Miami's Cuban exile community in Miami were gravely concerned by these new, seemingly arbitrary detentions. Thankfully, they were released and were able to share their stories with the public and warn against the dangers of improved relations with a tyrannical regime in Havana. On October 27th, I sent a letter to Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen explaining why the United States must vote against Alicia Bárcena Ibarra for President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB). Ibarra has a long and detailed record of apologizing for dictators in Latin America and criticizing free market economies. At a time when socialists are taking over Latin America, it would be incredibly dangerous to the United States and the cause of freedom in our hemisphere for them to have an ally strategically placed in the heart of Washington D.C. The Biden Administration must oppose her candidacy. Read my press release here and a story from National Review on the controversy here. Bipartisan Work on the Infant Formula Crisis On October 25th, aided by Congresswomen Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) and Stephanie Bice (R-OK), I introduced the Access to Donor Milk Act (ADMA), a bipartisan effort to expand and promote access to donor breast milk. Donor milk is a healthy and safe alternative to infant formula or breast milk directly from the baby's mother when supply is short. As a mother of two beautiful daughters, I know that feeding and nourishing our infants should be as easy as possible whether parents use breast milk, formula, or donor milk. I am proud to co-lead this legislation that will, especially in times of crisis, help suppliers meet demand for safe and healthy donor milk, especially in times of crisis. Building an International Coalition Opposing Mexico's Use of Cuban Doctors On October 14th, alongside elected officials from the Mexican government, I once again denounced Mexico’s use of Cuban medical doctors in violation of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Along with, U.S. Senator Marcio Rubio, Congressman Díaz-Balart, and Congressman Giménez, we signed a letter to Samantha Tate, Division Chief for USMCA, to call for an investigation into these possible violations. The Next Generation of America's Military On October 13th, I hosted 50 bright young students, their parents, and representatives from all five U.S. Service Academies at our annual Recruitment Day event, held at Brigade 2506's Bay of Pigs Museum, to preview the nomination and selection process. Preserving Florida's Beauty and Wildlife On October 5th, Representative Ron Kind (WI-03) and I introduced H.R. 9135, the Migratory Birds of the Americas Conservation Enhancements Act, in the House to ensure we continue providing robust conservation for migratory birds in the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Birds are a vital part of our South Florida ecosystem and must be actively protected,” said Congresswoman Salazar. “Neotropical birds that span the Americas are not only unique but are critical to pollinating many plant species in our forests and wetlands.
