Friend –
Any minute now, Governor Tom Wolf will make a decision on whether to veto a bill that would be a massive gift to the fossil fuel industry. A bill that his administration pushed in the waning days of his term.
Passed late Wednesday with nearly no notice or time for genuine debate, the amended House Bill 1059 would create tax credits – 90% of which would go to the gas industry – that would cost roughly $3.6 billion in revenue over the next 20 years. This bill puts polluters over Pennsylvanians and would do nothing to lead Pennsylvania into a sustainable, green economy or guarantee good-paying union jobs for Pennsylvanians.
Experts predict the facilities being funded in this tax credit could kick start the next generation of fracking. Too often, the introduction of new energy sources comes without much public input and that leaves Pennsylvanians, particularly those living in environmental justice communities, vulnerable to negative impacts. We cannot allow Governor Wolf to approve this handout to the fossil fuel industry. Urge him to use his veto power to protect Pennsylvanians!
House Bill 1059 will waste limited resources for state economic development by subsidizing the extraction and burning of fossil fuels when we need to be moving towards decarbonizing. Worse, this handout to wealthy corporations will take away funding from other programs that Pennsylvanians need like more investments in energy efficiency and solar.
Further, this tax credit package claims to create 1,200 jobs, but it does not guarantee that these will be permanent jobs, or that these will be union jobs for Pennsylvanians. Green energy and technology are some of the fastest growing job sectors in the United States and Pennsylvania is falling behind, because we are not investing in these sectors that are proven to work and are getting cheaper by the year.
Friend, we’re hearing that Governor Wolf will make a decision any minute, so we need to act as soon as possible. Tell him we’re counting on him to veto House Bill 1059, as amended by A05857, and push Pennsylvania toward a clean, green economy – not a fracking boom 2.0.
Thanks for all that you do to protect our water, air, and open spaces,
