Statement from Representative Adriano Espaillat on the Passing of Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, Pastor of Abyssinian Baptist Church
NEW YORK, NY -- Earlier today, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) issued the following statement on news of the passing of Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church of Harlem.
"Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, was a beloved mentor, friend and pillar of our community, and the news of his passing is truly heartbreaking," said Rep. Espaillat.
"I extend my deepest condolences to the entire Butts family, the Abyssinian Baptist Church congregation, and everyone whose lives Rev. Butts touched through the ministry and in faith.
"May God comfort all who knew and loved him during this time of bereavement, and may his legacy continue to inspire each of us through our actions and deeds throughout our community. Rest in peace, dear friend."
Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, served as pastor of the globally renowned Abyssinian Baptist Church in the City of New York for 50 years and his belief in community revitalization led to investing in housing and commercial development in Harlem. His vision inspired the establishment of the Thurgood Marshall Academy for Learning and Social Change public intermediate and high school in Harlem, as well as the Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower School.
Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, served with honor and distinction as pastor of the oldest African American Baptist church in New York State.
