Dear friends,
I first met Sarah McBride when she was in high school, and I was genuinely struck by her commitment to public service. Not long after, she was awarded the William Roth Citizenship Award and a scholarship from the New Castle County Chamber -- a distinction I knew she more than deserved.
Sarah likes to say Delaware is still small enough to be a state of neighbors, but she is more than a neighbor, she is a friend. So when Sarah called to let me know that she published a powerful coming-out essay as president of the student body of her college, I reassured her that living her truth wouldn't limit her opportunities because that is not the America that I know. Someone with Sarah's talent and life experiences deserves a chance to serve.
My admiration for Sarah's sense of purpose only grew as she organized grassroots efforts to help Governor Jack Markell enact a law protecting LGBTQ Delawareans from being unfairly denied housing, employment, or public accommodations because of who they love or how they identify.
Now, Sarah's running for the First State Senate district to make health care more affordable, expand paid family leave, support Delaware schools, and fight for criminal justice reform.
Sarah made history as the first openly transgender person to address a major party convention at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, but it was the passion for public service she displayed that was so familiar to those of us lucky enough to know her, be her neighbor, and call her a friend.
I'm proud to endorse Sarah in her campaign for the First State Senate district, and I hope you'll join me. This time of year matters for most candidates and causes, but for Sarah, it's huge. This is her first-ever fundraising deadline. Sarah needs to show that she is ready to win this campaign and make progress in Dover, but she can't do that without your support.
If you're as proud as I am to have Sarah in this race, then we need your help to ensure she has the resources needed before her first fundraising deadline. Will you pitch in $5 or more now to our campaigns?
