Dear John,
We are facing a crucial election in less than two weeks. (If you haven't yet gotten your personalized voter guide, take a moment right now to text the word GUIDE to 67742--a previous version of this email had the wrong number.) But after every election, the "lame-duck" session of Congress presents a well-known threat. With electoral accountability at low ebb, Congress often uses "must-pass" legislation as a vehicle to sneak through anti-life, anti-family, and anti-freedom legislation.
Don't wait! Tell Delegate Norton, your senators to stand strong, and not to be lame in the lame duck!
When Congress returns after the election, they will be faced with two bills--an appropriations bill and the National Defense Authorization Act--to keep the government funded after Dec. 16th and to fund the military next year. The must-pass nature of these bills makes them a tempting target for unrelated amendments, tacking on partisan legislation that would not otherwise pass in order to sneak it through. This year, liberals have promised lame-duck add-ons to promote abortion, advance gender identity ideology in schools (and even our homes), and supercharge attacks on religious liberty!
I know--lame.
Will you take a moment right now to send a message to Delegate Norton, your senators, and tell them not to be lame during the lame duck?
Unfortunately, this kind of tomfoolery is all too common. Last year, Congress added a version of the Violence Against Women Act to must-pass appropriations legislation with a gender identity ideology poison pill that will lead to further trauma and reduced resources for battered women. (And that wasn't even in a lame-duck session!)
Because we expect a virtual avalanche of legislation between the election and the end of the year, it's important that constituents like you speak up now to encourage your elected officials to be vigilant.
Members of Congress need to be reminded to:
* Stand for life: It's critical that any funding bills maintain existing pro-life policies that prohibit funding for abortion (like the Hyde Amendment) and protect the conscience rights of medical professionals so that they are never pressured or forced to participate in an abortion.
* Resist harmful gender identity ideology: Currently, numerous bills advance gender identity ideology, erode parental rights (by increasing the likelihood that parents who do not toe the LGBT agenda line will be seen as child abusers), increase the number of children who are socially transitioned in their schools, and even mandate insurance coverage for gender transition procedures, just to name a few.
* Be vigilant: Members, especially those who are retiring or who have just been re-elected, may be tempted to vote for "feel-good" bills with vague language and subtle anti-life, anti-family, or anti-religious liberty amendments. They will need to keep a sharp eye out--and it will help them to know that you are already planning to watch over their shoulder!
Will you join me in telling Congress that you're watching, even before the election? Members will be under increased pressure to pass legislation before the year ends. Tell them to stand for faith, family, and freedom, and not to go lame during this year's lame duck!
Sincerely,
Quena Gonzalez
