Permitless carry and public shootings

This is scary, John. Texas law enforcement officials are reporting that the state’s new permitless carry law, which allows anyone over the age of 21 to carry a handgun in public, has led to an increase in “spontaneous shootings.”

In Houston, 9-year-old Arlene Alvarez was killed by a man trying to shoot a robbery suspect. Elsewhere in Houston, people have brandished or fired guns over parking spots, unsafe driving, or live music. In El Paso, partygoers have opened fire in an attempt to stop fights. In Eagle Pass, drunken arguments have turned into shootings in just a split second.

This is what we feared all along.

We KNOW that states with weaker gun laws see more gun violence. Now we’re seeing the heartbreaking consequences of adopting a “guns everywhere” agenda. We can’t sit by while gun lobby politicians keep putting our communities at risk. Can you pitch in to help us keep fighting to put an end to deadly permitless carry laws like this one?

We can’t afford to back away from this fight. Texas is far from the only state to enact a permitless carry law. Soon half of all states in the country will not require a permit to carry a firearm in public.

This is what’s at stake in the midterm elections, John. This movement to remove any and all reasonable regulations on firearms is dangerous and out of step with what voters want, but it has gained traction among state leaders beholden to the gun industry. If we don’t get out the vote for gun responsibility champions, we will see more states following Texas’s lead. That will mean more lives like Arlene's lost to preventable gun violence.

Please, donate what you can today to help us fight back against the gun lobby’s deadly guns everywhere agenda.

Thank you,
Renée Hopkins (she/her)
