The American Way

Spotlight

Control of the Senate could hinge on whether Rev. Raphael Warnock can keep his Senate seat or is defeated by Herschel Walker, a former athlete who has become a far-right extremist. Depending on who gains a Senate majority, the rest of the Biden-Harris administration agenda is either on track or dead on arrival in Congress. And a rematch between Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Stacey Abrams could not provide a clearer example of the stark differences between MAGA Republicans and a pro-democracy, pro-choice, pro-healthcare leader who would be emblematic of the American Way.

It's one of the reasons why People For has chosen to invest in getting out the vote in Georgia including radio ads, digital ads, peer-to-peer texting, and tapping our network of activist-artists to create content that calls attention to what is at stake in Georgia’s election and nationwide.

Our Perilous Future if MAGA Republicans Win

We’re just over a week away until Election Day and polls are showing that Trump cultists and lackeys are running neck-and-neck, or even ahead, in key races for governor, secretary of state, and U.S. Senate and House.

These candidates threaten the future of our democracy, our reproductive freedoms, our health care, our freedom to learn in K12 classrooms and so much more. As MAGA Republicans tighten their stronghold on the American electorate, we veer perilously close to a future where their efforts may become even more difficult to defeat – but with your continued support and advocacy, we can successfully defeat them.

Please rush a renewal donation today and power People For’s efforts to defend the American Way from their radical, far-right agenda during the midterm elections and beyond >>

Of all the awful acts perpetrated by the Far Right, attempting to prevent certain groups from voting might be the most insidious. Voting is power, and voter suppression is a blatant effort to remove that power from people who would use it for good. Voting affects the issues we care deeply about, from health care to education to public safety to climate change, and the Far Right knows it. So, they go out of their way to control voting rights.

Some things are unthinkable—until they happen. For Jamie Raskin, a congressman and father, the first unthinkable thing was the loss of his beloved son Tommy to suicide on New Year’s Eve 2020. The second unthinkable thing happened less than a week later. Enraged supporters of the defeated President Donald Trump attacked the U.S. Capitol and hunted for members of Congress to prevent them from affirming the results of the presidential election.

As the ninth Jan. 6 hearing concluded, the nine members of the select committee investigating that Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol were presented with a resolution from Vice Chair Liz Cheney: Would they vote to issue a subpoena for Donald J. Trump in relation to the attack on the Capitol? They would. With a roll call vote, it was bipartisan and unanimous.

“This is a question about accountability to the American people,” Chairman Bennie Thompson said. “He must be held accountable.” Trump would be the first president in nearly 50 years to be subpoenaed by Congress. But the stakes—the future of democracy—require it, argued Cheney.

People For’s new Book Club premiered with Rep. Jamie Raskin where we discussed his book Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy. Our next author in the Book Club series is Elie Mystal: senior fellow at People For, justice correspondent for The Nation and MSNBC legal contributor who will join us on Tuesday, November 1 at 4:00 PM ET (1:00 PM PT).

Elie’s book Allow Me to Retort: A Black Guy’s Guide to the Constitution offers readers insight into the rights enshrined in our Constitution and explains the way the Far Right is seeking to undermine those rights – and how progressives can begin fighting back.
