** October 2022 Newsletter

** Funding Fair
------------------------------------------------------------

It was great to be back in person for my seventh annual Funding Fair at St Theodore’s. There was a real buzz in the hall and everyone had a very busy morning as community groups heard directly from the experts about how they could access funding and support.
It was fantastic to see so many community groups and to hear about their innovative ideas and projects.
Thank you to everyone who took part and it made it such a resounding success.

** Welsh Cross Party Group on Industrial Communities
------------------------------------------------------------
As Chair of All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Shared Prosperity Fund, it was great to speak to the Welsh Cross Party Group on Industrial Communities alongside Vaughan Gething MS and Professor Steve Fothergill from the Industrial Communities Alliance.

I talked about the importance of ensuring that UK Government keeps its’ promises on replacing all EU development funding and not short-changing our local communities.

** Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme
------------------------------------------------------------

I am taking part in the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme, and last week we visited British troops who are stationed in Tapa, Estonia, defending NATO’s eastern flank against possible Russian invasion. The professionalism and dedication of our armed forces is second to none, and it was truly an honour to meet these men and women who are keeping us safe.

** Labour Conference
------------------------------------------------------------

It was great to attend this year's Labour conference, which was full of positive energy!

I was happy to speak at a number of fringe events, where I took part in really important discussions, including a wide range of topics, ranging from child trafficking to repairing divides after Brexit.

I re-affirmed Labour's commitment to ensure that British National Overseas passport holders are treated fairly, but also to push for the government to retain their commitment to those born after 1997.

I also spoke about how Labour would repair the damaged relationship this Tory Government has created with the EU.

** This Month In Parliament
------------------------------------------------------------
Speech on Floating Off-Shore Wind

I was happy to speak in the Westminster Hall debate about Floating Offshore Wind.

I spoke about how Aberavon is the perfect place to have floating offshore wind and how it would bring good paying, sustainable jobs to the area.

I spoke about the fact that we have many highly skilled people here in the area ready to hit the ground running.

I spoke of how the floating offshore wind would be a key part of the UK becoming energy dependent and energy secure.
Uprating Benefits with Inflation

I spoke out against the damage the Tories have done to our economy and asked Jeremy Hunt why he thinks it's acceptable not to raise benefits in line with inflation.

I asked: "Does the Chancellor think that it is morally justifiable to lift the cap on bankers’ bonuses while refusing to confirm that he will link benefits to inflation?"
Napier Barracks Visit

This month I visited Napier Barracks in Folkestone, which is now being used as accommodation for asylum seekers.

This is symptomatic of the broken Tory asylum system in which decisions are made at half the speed they were in 2018, & where Channel crossings have reached record highs.

I also spoke to Folkestone and Hythe CLP about Napier Barracks and Labour's plans to fix the broken Tory asylum system.

We would speed up asylum processing & switch Rwanda spending to a new elite unit in National Crime Agency to tackle criminal smuggler gangs.

** Media Highlights
------------------------------------------------------------
BBC South East

I was on BBC South East to talk about the broken Tory asylum system and how the number of Channel crossings have gone through the roof.

Labour would switch spending from the failing Rwanda plan to form an elite cell in the National Crime Agency that can tackle smuggler gangs in France and upstream.
