Weekly InSight
This week, InSight Crime travels to the city of Culiacán, in Mexico’s Sinaloa state, to investigate how the synthetic drug trade has contributed to an uptick in forced disappearances that has left collectives of people searching for their missing loved ones.

We also break down the major takeaways from a new report by Paraguay's congress that connects former President Horacio Cartes to crimes ranging from cigarette smuggling to money laundering. And we delve into Bolivia’s expanding cocaine trade in an interview with security and drug trafficking expert Joaquín Chacin.

In Sinaloa, Mexico, a Deadly Mix of Synthetic Drugs and Forced Disappearances

Beside the steps leading up to the crisp white walls of the Catholic cathedral that towers over downtown Culiacán, Sinaloa, almost 40 bright red posters demand the attention of passersby.

InSight Crime at the United Nations

Last week, InSight Crime took part in the 11th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) in Vienna, Austria. The conference focused on discussing global organized crime dynamics, identifying patterns, and presenting recommendations.

InSight Crime was granted observer status to the biannual conference, once restricted to the United Nations and the representatives of member states. We hosted two panels at the conference; one on criminal exploitation of migrants and another on environmental crime in the Amazon.
